Celebrating the life of

Nancy Louise Vance Carroll

November 19, 1926 - November 23, 2023

Nancy Louise Vance Carroll

Nancy Louise Vance Carroll, a resident of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 23, 2023, in Hospice care at The Oaks at The Marshes of Skidaway Island. Nancy was a loving wife, caring mother, proud grandmother, and a loyal and delightful friend. She was an elegant lady who was immensely positive, a gracious hostess and a competitive bridge player.

Nancy was born on November 19, 1926, in Monroe, Louisiana, the daughter of George Raymond and Ella Julia Vance. She was raised in El Dorado, Arkansas, where she graduated from El Dorado High School and went on to graduate from the University of Arkansas, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. There she met Charles Marion Carroll, Jr. and the couple were married on August 28, 1948.

The Carroll family grew with the addition of a daughter, Nan, and a son, Bill, and Nancy became a full-time mom. Her husband's career moved them to six states, including Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Ohio, Illinois, and finally raising their family in Wilton, Connecticut, where they lived for 22 years. Nancy was very active and had many good friends doing volunteer work in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Chi Omega-Alumnae, PTA’s, Girl Scouts, Wilton Cotillions, Garden Club, Silver Spring Country Club, and the Wilton Congregational Church.

When her husband retired in 1987, they moved to The Landings on Skidaway Island, Georgia. Here, Nancy made many friends, enjoyed playing golf, always looked forward to hosting fun parties, and absolutely loved to play duplicate bridge. Her volunteer work continued, including membership in "The One Hundred!” the Landings Garden Club, Savanah “Friends of Music,” and her beloved church, the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church.

Nancy was a devoted and proud Grandmother to her six grandchildren. Known as “Nana” to the kids, she read countless books, baked countless cookies and cupcakes, and joyfully played game after game, especially if it included playing cards.

Nancy was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years, Charles Marion Carroll, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Nan Carroll Merolla of Norwalk, Connecticut, and her husband Paul Anthony Merolla, and their children, Paul A. Merolla Jr. and Christine C. Merolla; and her son William Vaughn Carroll of Cincinnati, Ohio and his wife, Beth Buse Carroll, and their children William V. Carroll, Jr., Charles M. Carroll (Julia,) Connor B. Carroll (Caroline,) their daughters Charlotte and Chloe, and Daniel V. Carroll.

The family sends heartfelt thanks to the incredibly wonderful and compassionate team of nurses, caregivers, and staff at The Oaks at The Marshes of Skidaway Island and Gentiva Hospice. Remembrances may be kindly sent to Skidaway Community Church, 50 Diamond Causeway, Savannah, GA 31411, or Wilton Congregational Church, 70 Ridgefield Road, Wilton, CT 06897.
